Child of God: Our Identity and Dignity in Christ
Galatians 4:7 - “Therefore you are no longer a slave (bond-servant), but a son; and if a son, then also an heir through [the gracious act of] God [through Christ].”
John 1:12-13 - “But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the right [the authority, the privilege] to become children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name - who were born, not of blood [natural conception], nor of the will of the flesh [physical impulse], nor of the will of man [that of a natural father], but of God [that is, a divine and supernatural birth - they are born of God, spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified].”
In a world where the pursuit of identity can feel overwhelming, remember that our true identity is not found in our roles, functions, or what others say about us, but in being children of God. Through the miracle of spiritual rebirth, we are not defined by human origins, achievements, or failures. Our identity as children of God comes with incredible dignity - (the opposite of shame ) When Eve sinned, she exchanged her dignity for Satan's shame, but through Christ, we receive the Spirit of adoption, restoring our dignity.
Restored Dignity: Embracing the Fullness of Being God's Child
This dignity isn't just a concept; it is a powerful reality. As children of God, we are endowed with power, authority, and the full armor of our true identity in God. We are no longer chained by shame, insecurity, or fear. Embracing our identity in Christ means embracing His love, His peace, and the confidence that comes from knowing we belong to Him. Stop seeking identity in mere titles and functions; He has already given it to you. Embrace your identity as a beloved child of God, clothed in dignity and empowered by His Spirit.
Ask yourself: Where have I been looking to the world to affirm my identity? In what areas do I struggle to fully believe that I am God’s child, already dignified and beloved?
Slave of Righteousness: Our Direction and Function in Christ
Romans 6:15-23 - “What then [are we to conclude]? Shall we sin because we are not under Law, but under [God's] grace? Certainly not! Do you not know that when you continually offer yourselves to someone to do his will, you are the slaves of the one whom you obey, either [slaves] of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness (right standing with God)?”
When we offer ourselves to God and willingly follow the direction of His doctrine, we become slaves to righteousness, aligning with His divine purpose. This is the path of sanctification, the process of being set apart for God’s holy purposes. Why is this so vital? Because being a slave to righteousness isn't about bondage - it's about stepping into a life of meaning and eternal purpose, far beyond any temporary gain this world offers.
Reflect: What do I serve most with my time, energy, and thoughts? Am I obedient to God’s direction, or am I caught up in serving my own ambitions and desires?
In God’s kingdom, each of us has a role and a place. Our function is to live out His will, using our abilities and talents for His glory. Just as Paul emphasised in his letters, our function in God’s kingdom is not just to “be good people” but to actively engage in righteousness, allowing His Spirit to lead us and transform us. Don’t settle for a weak crown; seek God wholeheartedly. Embrace your part in the body of Christ and be the vibrant, purpose-driven believer He calls you to be.
Ministry Titles and Gifts: Tools Given to Us by Christ
Ephesians 4:11-13 - “And [His gifts to the church were varied and] He Himself appointed some as apostles [special messengers, representatives], some as prophets [who speak a new message from God to the people], some as evangelists [who spread the good news of salvation], and some as pastors and teachers [to shepherd and guide and instruct], [and He did this] to fully equip and perfect the saints (God's people) for works of service, to build up the body of Christ [the church]; until we all reach oneness in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God.”
Our spiritual gifts and titles are not idols to be worshiped or obsessions to chase. They are tools, beautifully and purposefully given to us by Jesus, to serve His Kingdom. When we focus more on titles than on the mission, we lose sight of God’s design, and our spiritual focus dims. These gifts are meant to:
Equip God’s people for service.
Build up the church.
Lead us to unity in faith.
Help us grow to spiritual maturity, reaching the fullness of Christ.
These roles are not about serving ourselves but about serving Him. Let’s shift our focus from the tools to the Giver and the mission He has set before us. Our purpose as children of God is to draw others into oneness with Him. When we live for that purpose, our gifts have eternal impact.
A Call to Action: Step Into Your Identity and Function
Let this message sink in and inspire action in your life:
Reflect on Your Identity: Take time in prayer and meditation to internalize the truth that you are a child of God, full of dignity and grace. Every day, remind yourself that your identity is rooted in His love, not in the approval of others.
Offer Yourself to Righteousness: Choose each day to offer your life to God, allowing His Spirit to guide you. Examine areas in your life that need alignment with God’s will, and ask for His help to walk in righteousness.
Use Your Gifts with Humility: If God has gifted you with specific talents or placed you in a role, remember that these are not for self-glorification but for the growth of His Kingdom. Look for ways to serve others, build up your community, and reflect the love of Christ in all you do.
A Heart of Worship and Gratitude
Pause and worship the Giver of all gifts, the One who made you His own and called you to a purpose greater than anything this world can offer. He has clothed you with dignity, called you to righteousness, and equipped you for His mission. Worship Him for this honor and grace, and thank Him daily for the privilege of being His child.
Prayer
“Lord, thank You for calling us Your children and for giving us a purpose that goes beyond ourselves. Help us to walk in righteousness, fully embracing our identity in You and using our gifts to serve others and glorify You. Lead us away from the distraction of titles and functions, and root us firmly in Your love and purpose. Let our lives shine as testimonies of Your goodness, drawing others closer to You. Amen.”
Moving Forward in Faith
Your identity is secure, your purpose is clear, and your gifts are from the Lord. Take this truth and live it boldly. Allow God’s love to fill every part of your life, and remember that the greatest impact you can make is by living as a beloved child of God, clothed in dignity, empowered by His Spirit, and committed to His Kingdom. Let this be the foundation of your life, your choices, and your journey as a vibrant part of the body of Christ.
